Cooperatives operate within the framework of the Turkish Commercial Code No. 6102 and the Cooperatives Law No. 1163. Cooperatives are a unique model that strengthens the social economy. Its basis is voluntary and open membership, economic participation of partners, legal oversight, independence, autonomy and responsibility towards the collection. It is estimated that cooperatives serve over 1 billion people worldwide and their annual turnover is 2 trillion dollars.

The legal infrastructure required for the establishment of cooperatives and the regulation of their activities is called cooperative law.
Cooperatives are economic based formations. The Cooperative Law No. 1163 also regulates the protection of the economic assets of individuals originating from the cooperative. In addition, cooperatives established in each residence have relations with almost every branch of law such as criminal law, enforcement law, compensation law, contract law and administrative law, along with their own legislation. Therefore, every cooperative has an obligation to have a lawyer or to work with a contract lawyer. Otherwise, he is faced with a judicial fine equal to twice the gross minimum wage for each month.
